Pressestimmen
"Riveting . . . Based on various documentary sources as well as impressive access to royalists, revolutionaries, Queen Farah Pahlavi, and various U.S. officials, this thorough work is immensely detailed yet readable and continuously engaging." --Publishers Weekly "[Cooper] delves intimately into the life of the leader who believed firmly in the separation of church and state and who seemed stern and humorless to the public yet was a devoted father of five children and had no patience for the imams dragging their feet on reforms. . . A thorough new appraisal of an enigmatic ruler who died believing his people still loved him." --Kirkus (starred review) "Cooper provides an expert and more nuanced view of the Shah, his regime, and its collapse....This is a fine revisionist study of major world events that continue to influence the fate of the Middle East." --Booklist"Here is all the power and glamour--but also the dark side and ultimately the tragedy--of the last Shah of Iran. A moving and thoroughly researched account." --Robert Lacey, author of The Kingdom and Inside the Kingdom"The Fall of Heaven is a vivid and penetrating portrait of the last chapters of imperial Iran and the ruler whose attempt to thrust his country into modernity ended with upheaval and exile. This book provides valuable insight into the background of a revolution that is still shaking international politics today."--Paul R. Pillar, twenty-eight-year veteran of the CIA and senior fellow at Georgetown University and the Brookings Institution

Detailed, but unfortunately highly apologetic account of Mohammad Reza Shahs reign, focussing on the way to revolution. MRS's decisions and results are consistently benchmarked against the record of the following Islamic Republic and the options available to him at his time remain unexplored. In the early seventies de-colonisation was almost completed and in western democracies numerous goups were campaigning for civil rights. Why MRS found that an absolute monarchy was still a fitting form of government remains unanswered.Instead he is almost victimised, suggesting that an ungrateful people and disloyal allies have let him down. The author suggests that if MRS had only been more willing to exercise force against his people (as his army wanted) the Islamic Republic could have been prevented. At the same time it remains completely obscure why so many different parts of Iranian society at the time wanted him gone. The book focusses on Khomeini's supporters as the eventual winners of revolution, but fails to offer insights into what mobilized so many different parts of Iranian society against the shah. That Iran became an Islamic Republic and not a parliamentary democracy is based on Mohammad Rezas Shahs decisions. However, after the book the reader is none the wiser regarding his motivations. On the positive side the author is very transparent regarding his intentions. He starts the account with a comparsion of the number of political prisoners and their executions between Pahlavi rule and the IR. Why there were any political prisoners under Pahlavi rule is not of the author's concern. Shame. So much research, so few learnings.
Leider....
Best book
This book should properly be referred to as an encomium, as would be any book about the subject to which Farah Diba has contributed.A well-written attempt to whitewash Reza Pahlavi, one of the most brutal despots of the twentieth century (a man who can be claimed, in fairness, to have played in the same league in which Kin Jong-Il leads the field today, and who was a contemporary of Mr. Jong-Un's grandfather). Mr. Pahlavi, whose much-touted idealim was in fact delusion, was, by all neutral and objective accounts, a weak-willed individual prone to embarassing self-aggrandizement, pompous boasts and heeding the advice of incompetent sycophants.Given Mr. Cooper expertise in matters Iran, one wonders why he has chosen to write this soap opera.
